TIJUANA RIVER WATERSHED

The Tijuana River Watershed spans the U.S. Mexico border and covers approximately 1,750 mi², with one-third of watershed in California and two-thirds in Baja California. The natural resources are rich and varied. The watershed is located in an internationally recognized hotspot of biodiversity where a large number of threatened or endangered plant and animal species are found. 

More than one million people live within the boundaries of the Tijuana River Watershed. There are many political jurisdictions that govern portions of the watershed including; the County of San Diego, the City of San Diego, the City of Imperial Beach, several Native American Reservations, and the municipalities of Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada. The States of California and Baja California also provide governance for areas of the watershed, as do federal agencies from Mexico and the United States. 
 
 
A Binational Vision 

A binational team of stakeholders, the Binational Watershed Advisory Council, has been organized to develop a Binational Vision for the Tijuana River Watershed. The vision will contain stakeholders’ views about the ideal state for their watershed in the near and distant future and will recommend strategies and alternatives for achieving that vision. Funding sources include the State of California, the County of San Diego, and San Diego State University.

La Cuenca del Río Tijuana

La cuenca del Río Tijuana yace sobre el limite internacional entre los Estados Unidos y México y incluye aproximadamente 4,465 km², con una tercera parte en California y dos terceras partes en Baja California. Los recursos naturals de la cuenca son ricos y variados. La cuenca está localizada en una zona importante para la biodiversidad. En esta zona, la cual es internacionalmente reconocida, se encuentran una gran cantidad de especies de flora y fauna en peligro o en amenaza de extinción.

Más de un millón de personas viven dentro de los límites de la cuenca. Existen numerosas jurisdicciones políticas que gobiernan secciones de la cuenca incluyendo: el condado de San Diego; la ciudad de San Diego; la ciudad de Imperial Beach; varias reservaciones indígenas; y los municipios de Tijuana, Tecate, y Ensenada. Los estados de California y de Baja California gobiernan algunas partes de la cuenca, como también lo hacen agencies federales de México y de los Estados Unidos.

Una Visión Binacional

Un equipo binacional de personas de varios sectores que tienen interés en la cuenca, el Consejo Consultivo de la Cuenca Binacional, ha sido organizado para desarrollar una visión binacional para la cuenca del Río Tijuana. La visión incorporará los conceptos de las personas interesadas acerca del estado ideal de su cuenca para el futuro inmediato y distante y también recomendará estrategias y alternatives para lograr esa visión.
